Overview
[$Video_BB$]

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a privately-held, family owned company that was founded in 1916 by the Wegman family. Based in Rochester, NY, they have raised the bar on the customer shopping experience. The company prides itself on offering exceptional customer service, high quality goods, an abundance of choice, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and beautiful stores and displays.

Wegmans has more than 39,000 employees and offers exceptional benefits, including an employee scholarship program. They also provide flexible scheduling, a challenging work environment and caring management throughout all levels of the organization. In fact, in 2010, FORTUNE Magazine ranked Wegmans #3 on its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.

Wegmans puts a huge emphasis on being an innovator in retail technology. In 1974, Wegmans was one of the first companies to introduce bar-code scanning, and in 1990 Wegmans introduced electronic discounts. The company launched its web site, wegmans.com in 1996. The site not only helps customers save time and money through its on-line ad, but also offers meal solutions, recipes, and even provides the ability to apply for jobs within the company.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Ranked #3 on FORTUNE magazine's 2010 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. Wegmans has been on the list every year since it began in 1998, and in 2005, ranked #1.
  • A major regional supermarket chain, and one of the largest private companies in the U.S.
  • Raised the bar on the shopping experience - better quality goods, a spectacular abundance of choice, restaurant-quality prepared foods, beautiful stores and displays, a nearly telepathic level of customer service.
  • Consistent low prices, everyday, in all departments so that customers don't have to run around town chasing deals.
  • An early adopter of new technology: Wegmans was one of the first supermarkets to introduce electronic discounts in 1990 and bar-code scanning in 1974. The late Robert Wegman co-chaired the public policy subcommittee for the grocery industry development of the UPC.
  • Known for exceptional levels of charitable donations. Giving is focused on programs that reduce hunger, help young people succeed, and strengthen neighborhoods. Wegmans gave food banks 15 million pounds of food in 2009.
  • Strong employee benefit programs, especially their employee scholarship program, which provides nearly $4.5 million in tuition assistance to employees each year.
  • Industry analyst Neil Stern, quoted in a 1994 front-page story about Wegmans in the Wall Street Journal, said, “We consider them the best chain in the country, maybe in the world.”

Rochester, NY – Wegmans announced that 1,416 employees from across the company have been awarded a scholarship to offset the cost of college tuition. The company will pay out a total of $4.6 million for the 2006/2007 academic year to new recipients and previous scholarship recipients still in school. Since its inception in 1984, the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program has awarded over $59 million in tuition assistance to more than 19,000 employees.

Part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $1,500 a year for four years. Full-time employees are eligible to receive up to $2,200 a year for four years. In order to be eligible, employees must work a minimum number of hours over a specified period of time and must maintain both a high academic standard and a good work record. Although recipients can choose the educational and career path they desire, many have pursued careers with Wegmans after graduating from college.

An outside committee comprised of college admissions professionals and a team from Wegmans reviews the applications to determine who will receive the scholarships. The external committee evaluates such things as SAT scores, grades, and extracurricular activities; the internal Wegmans committee evaluates work performance.
