Overview
It had been nearly six decades since the first Lund boats were assembled in New York mills by G. Howard Lund, and over the past decades Lund has grown into the premier fishing boat company in America.
In 1948 Howard built his first aluminum duck boat, which took about a week to build. The boat was on top of the family car along highway 10, and this unintentional advertising brought a boat salesman from Inland Marine Corporation to his doorstep. He inquired where he could get a boat like that. Howard explained that he had built it himself, and that he was willing to build more. The salesman put in an order for 50 boats, and with that Lund America was created.
The business started with three employees in his garage, and a year later he had moved to a new building, and hired 15 employees. Since then the company has expanded to take up 29 acres, and employ over 500 people.
Leading the industry is a role that we take very seriously at

Products
Howard Lund pioneered aluminum boat design when he founded the Lund Boat Company in 1948. Today's most advanced testing affirms what Howard Lund knew - that aluminum is lighter, stronger, easier to drive, easier to tow, more fuel efficient, more durable, less trouble, and offers better handling than other materials.
What sets Lund apart from other aluminum boat-builders is our ability to get more out of the material. We build our boats to a different standard, with I-beams and double-riveted seams and sophisticated twin-plating that doesn’t add excessive weight. So as you compare boats, please do yourself a favor and make sure you’re comparing boats of the same class with same-class features. Here are some other aluminum advantages to consider:
Lund uses aluminum because it is lighter and more durable than other materials
Aluminum’s high strength-to-weight ratio offers easier towing and more capacity
Aluminum is also more economical, and it requires less maintenance
Lund continues to lead the industry in the maximization of aluminum-hull performance
Lund twin-plates its hull bow to midship, because that is where the boat absorbs the pounding. Testing - and history - shows that plating beyond midship creates additional weight that deteriorates performance. Along with unwanted sluggishness, excesssive twin-plating also adds excessive costs.
Lund double-rivets seams for unparalled structural integrity, and we use single-row rivets for our other connections. Bow support plates furtherenhance Lund strength and durability. We use welding to seal the two bottom sections of the hull where they are joined to form a single piece.
Our extruded marine-grade aluminum I-beams run longitudinally deep in the hull where they are tied to transverse stringers in the bow. Together they create the strongest, most-unified, and unyielding boat on the water.
