Blood Bank of Delmarva is a non-profit community service program that provides blood and blood products to the 17 hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula. More than 83,000 blood donations are needed in this area each year for more than 20,000 patients across the Delmarva Peninsula.
The goal of the Blood Bank is to meet the need for blood in an organized, systematic manner-to provide the greatest good for the greatest number at the least possible cost.
Since its establishment in 1955, the Blood Bank has supplied hospitals with over a million units of blood and blood components. It has demonstrated its ability to maintain a constant reserve supply of blood at hospitals and to supplement that inventory in large quantities within a short period after a request is received. It has eliminated blood shortages and emergency appeals for blood donors throughout its service area.
The Blood Bank employs over 200 full and part-time employees to recruit members, schedule and draw donors, process, test and deliver blood, and to provide service to its members and the community. In addition, another 200 people volunteer their time in the Blood Center canteens and administrative areas.
The key to the Blood Banks success is the Blood Assurance Plan, a simple yet effective approach toward maintaining an adequate blood supply. In exchange for the member paying a small annual dues fee and meeting a blood obligation about once every two years, the Blood Bank will replace or pay for any blood used by the member, spouse and dependents. This has spread the responsibility over a large population and has reduced the burden on each individual.
The Blood Bank's basis is its blood assurance plan which provides blood replacement coverage for its members.
