At AltaLink, we know transmission. It’s our business to make sure the lights stay on and our customers have access to the most cost-effective electrical supply.
As Canada’s only fully independent transmission company, we are responsible for the maintenance and operation of approximately 11,600 kilometres of transmission lines and 260 substations in Alberta. We own more than half of Alberta’s transmission grid and serve 85 per cent of its population. Additionally, we own the Alberta portion of the interconnection to British Columbia used to import and export electricity, connecting Alberta to the power grid in the Pacific Northwest.
We provide the vital transmission link between Alberta’s deregulated power generators and regulated distribution companies that bring electricity to homes, businesses and communities throughout Alberta. The capacity of our transmission lines range from 69,000 to 500,000 volts.
In an independent benchmarking study of 50 North American utilities, AltaLink ranked in the top quartile for cost, efficiency and reliability, and we rank number one overall in safety performance.

On April 30, 2002 AltaLink assumed control of Alberta’s largest transmission system (previously owned by TransAlta), marking the beginning of a new era in the Canadian electricity industry. With the completion of this transaction, our newly established company became the first independent transmission provider in Canada.
