COMPANY HISTORY

In 1978, the first store of what would become a chain of western and work wear retail stores opened in Huntington Beach, California. Ken Meany is the owner and founder of Boot Barn, which does business as Boot Barn, American Worker, and bootbarn.com. Mr. Meany, who had already spent a decade in the retail shoe business, capitalized on the strength of work and western boot sales and that fueled the success of Boot Barn since the late 70’s.

The popularity of Boot Barn grew progressively and in 1984 a second store was opened. Mr. Meany designed the store from the ground up, incorporating a “barn” design. He even built the store’s shelves with his own hands and with the assistance of his son, Patrick (who would later become President in 2004 and CEO of Boot Barn in 2007 upon Mr. Meany’s retirement). That store doubled as a retail outlet and the first corporate headquarters. In 1986, the third Boot Barn store opened in Montclair and the fourth store in San Bernardino opened June 1988.

Boot Barn continued to grow steadily from 1988 until 2007 with new stores added in California, Nevada, and Arizona. In 2008, Boot Barn made three significant acquisitions of the former Corral West Western Warehouse stores. A total of 45 acquired and four new stores were opened as Boot Barn that year. Since then Boot Barn resumed its store and online growth strategy.

Boot Barn’s most recent acquisition of RCC Western Stores occurred August 2012. RCC was established over 60 years ago and when its owner, Bob Hoover, decided to retire, the opportunity presented was a great complement to Boot Barn’s existing business. The combined Boot Barn/RCC Group makes us the largest specialty retailer in the Western and Work Wear industry, with stores coast to coast. The combined footprint now includes 117 stores in 21 states, with new stores opening in the new future.
