During the War of 1812, Fort Stephenson was built to hold off the British. It was here that Major George Croghan (nephew of George Rogers Clark), with only 160 men and a six-pound cannon called "Old Betsy," held the fort for two days against British forces under General Proctor.
In 1817 a village named "Lower Sandusky" was built on the west side of the Sandusky River. The village included the earlier settlement of "Croghansville" built on the east side of the river. The name was changed to "Fremont" in 1849. The city was made county seat of Sandusky County. Fremont's early industry included saw mills, flour mills and the first sugar mill in Ohio.
