The Village was founded in 1973 as a not-for-profit agency and was the first residential treatment program licensed by the State of Florida, Department of Children and Families. Remembering names like "dope fiends" and other, less flattering terminology reminds us of the tremendous change and growth that have taken place, both in terms of programs and services offered, and in the technological advancement of the field of addiction. For those who remember early philosophies of the Therapeutic Community, for instance, The Village once believed that it was okay to teach "responsible drinking"- yet was the first of the U.S. Therapeutic Communities to announce that total abstinence from all psycho-active drugs, including alcohol, was a key to success!
Today, The Village philosophy is to utilize the best science-based information to interpret our mission and to serve our clients. Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease and is, many times, accompanied by mental disorders and other behavioral problems that may or may not be the direct result of the addiction.
For over thirty (30) years, The Village has been providing comprehensive (holistic) multidimensional treatment to adults and adolescents, males and females, suffering from chemical dependency, mental illness, dual disorders, delinquency and related behavioral problems. Each year, more than 1000 adolescents, adults and/or their families, most of whom are indigent, receive clinical services at The Village.
