Overview
In 1975, a small—but uniquely structured—mutual fund company came into being. More than a quarter century later, Vanguard is internationally known for exceptional client service and the highest-value products in the industry.

Most investment firms are publicly traded or privately owned. Vanguard is different. We're owned by the Vanguard funds, which are owned by our clients. Helping our investors achieve their goals is our sole reason for existence. With no other parties to answer to and no conflicting loyalties, we can keep investing costs as low as possible. At Vanguard, you'll be part of a culture that calls for doing what is right in every situation, every day.

    It's a career, not just a job

As soon as you start working at Vanguard, you'll learn what's expected of you and what you need to do to achieve results. And you'll have access to world-class resources and support to help you succeed.

In 2009, we again were recognized as a leader, ranking sixth on Training magazine's "Training Top 125" list, for our strong commitment to learning and professional career development for every crew member. This is the eighth consecutive year the magazine has chosen Vanguard for this honor.

    An ongoing commitment
We offer resources to help you make informed decisions to develop your career. We also encourage you to have open conversations with your manager about your professional growth. Topics can include:
  • Setting objectives.
  • Knowing your learning style.
  • Leveraging your strengths.
  • Building on your current strengths.

    Components of your professional growth
  • Self-awareness. Know your strengths. Explore your personal attributes and working style.
  • Job options. Find job opportunities that align with your preferences and interests.
  • Action plan. Make it happen. Implement a plan of things you can do to move your career forward.
  • Work–life Balance at Vanguard
Vanguard understands that balancing work and your personal life can be difficult. You can keep both on track through our health and wellness programs, flexible scheduling options, confidential counseling services, and a wide range of other programs and services.

    Wellness
Throughout the year, we offer health-related programs such as blood pressure and cholesterol testing, mammography screenings, Weight Watchers at Work, and lunchtime seminars on health topics. Our health care plans are designed to help you manage health, not just to pay for medical treatment.

    Flexible schedule
We have many alternatives to the five-day-a-week, morning-until-night work schedule. In many of our departments, you can set your own arrival and departure times in consultation with your manager. In other departments, several shift choices are available. While business needs dictate our staffing levels, we are prepared to be as flexible as can be.

    Crew assistance
As a crew member, if you or a member of your immediate family have personal or family concerns or addiction problems, you may seek help through the Crew Assistance Program. This assistance is provided with the assurance of confidentiality and in our strong belief that our crew members' health is at the heart of keeping us a strong, healthy organization.

    Academic assistance
If you wish to continue your education while working full-time at Vanguard, our Academic Assistance Plan can help pay the cost. It provides up to $9,000 reimbursement per year for tuition and books for eligible graduate and undergraduate courses at accredited institutions.

    Scholarship program
After you've been a full-time crew member for at least two years, you'll be eligible to receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship award for each dependent child, age 25 or under, who is a full-time student at an accredited college or trade school.

    Crew Kids Ahoy!
If you have kids who need supervised, fun activities on school holidays when you have to work, Pennsylvania Crew Kids Ahoy! can help. Crew Kids Ahoy! plans imaginative and interesting day outings for school-year holidays and for summer day camps. Vanguard arranges and subsidizes the fun.

    Adoption assistance
Full-time crew members seeking to adopt children are eligible for reimbursement, up to a maximum of $11,650 per adoption, for such associated expenses as agency fees, court and legal fees, and counseling.

    Dependent care
If you're faced with child-care issues, or need help caring for a parent, Vanguard provides free information and referrals. We've negotiated discounts for crew members at nearby day care centers. If you meet certain income requirements, a company subsidy is available for the care of children or other dependents during working hours.

    Matching gift program
We encourage crew members to volunteer in their communities and contribute to worthy charities. If you write a check to an eligible educational, cultural, preservation, conservation, or other group, Vanguard will match it—up to an annual limit of $7,500 a year for full-time crew members.
    Growth Through Diversity
Vanguard's commitment to diversity extends throughout our company, from senior leaders through all 12,000 crew members across the country and the globe. We know that in our mission to be the highest-value provider of investment products and services, diversity of people, ideas, and viewpoints is one of our main assets.

"For us truly to be great as a company in terms of both serving our clients and as a place to work, we need highly engaged and very effective crew members. Engagement happens when everyone, no matter who they are, feels deeply valued. Moreover, the broader our diversity, the greater our effectiveness will be—for there is true power in having the widest-possible array of perspectives."
