For more than 90 years, City of Hope, a private, not-for-profit organization, has been leading the way to help millions of people who are battling life-threatening diseases. City of Hope is one of 39 elite institutions nationwide to be named as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center — the highest accolade given by the NCI — and one of the most advanced biomedical research and treatment facilities in the world. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) recently gave City of Hope an overall score of 99 out of 100 for health care quality and safety. Equally impressive, patients gave City of Hope the highest possible rating (three stars) in all categories for combined medical and surgical services in the Patients Evaluation of Performance in California (PEP-C II) survey.

At City of Hope, people find a world of progress and promise. Our biomedical campus covers 113 acres of state-of-the-art research laboratories and patient care facilities, in a tranquil environment of healing. Within the main arms of City of Hope our facilities include:
  • Beckman Research Institute - Founded at City of Hope in 1983, there are now more than 550 researchers conducting groundbreaking basic research every day, which allows city of Hope to quickly take new discoveries from the bench to the bedside. The Institute’s work is carried out by its divisions of Biology, Immunology, Neurosciences, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biology and Virology, as well as many independent research laboratories across the campus. City of Hope was selected to host the first Beckman Research Institute; today there are five nationwide
  • Helford Clinical Research Hospital – a state-of-the-art new facility opening in 2004 with 144 spacious, technologically advanced private patient rooms all with intensive air filtering systems.
  • National Medical Center - New and promising treatment options are thoroughly and meticulously studied at City of Hope National Medical Center while remaining true to the hospital’s commitment to provide compassionate patient care. Representing 28 board-certified specialties, City of Hope’s 107 attending physicians are some of “America’s Best” practitioners in their fields.
  • Center for Biomedicine & Genetics and the Sylvia R. & Isador A. Deutch Center for Applied Technology Development
    This state-of-the-art biomanufacturing facility is licensed by the State of California to produce pharmaceutical-grade therapeutic compounds. The Center for Biomedicine & Genetics (CBG) meets all qualifications for the development of new therapies for human use under federal FDA guidelines. As a National Gene Vector Laboratory, the CBG is also responsible for the production of plasmid DNA vectors for federally funded gene therapy research.
  • General Clinical Research Center
    Providing a sophisticated environment for the clinical testing of new therapies, our General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is funded by the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. The GCRC makes available specialized research nurses, examination and procedure rooms, and a Cell & Specimen Processing Laboratory. Among its most important roles is the facilitation of studies conducted by the Southern California Islet Cell Resources center.
  • Graduate School of Biological Sciences
    For nine years, City of Hope’s accredited Graduate School of Biological Sciences has offered postgraduate training in molecular biology, immunology, molecular medicine and neuroscience, including academic classes and intensive laboratory research.
  • Leslie and Susan Gonda (Goldschmeid) Diabetes and Genetic Research Center
    The Gonda Center is a key component of the Southern California Islet Cell Resources center, one of the major islet cell programs in the nation. It also houses the General Clinical Research Center.

  • City of Hope was a pioneer in the development of bone marrow transplants (BMT). Today, we are one of the largest providers of BMT in the world, with innovative protocols for patients with a variety of cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, and other illnesses, including autoimmune diseases.

City of Hope is located just northeast of Los Angeles in Duarte, California, is located on more than 113 beautifully landscaped acres, has 165 licensed beds, 39 of which are devoted to bone marrow transplantation patients.
