Equine Aide

Job Description

Melmark is a non-profit provider of educational, residential & therapeutic services for children & adults with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injury, mental retardation, and other neurological impairments. These services are provided on our campus and/or in community homes. These positions are located at our main campus in Berwyn, PA (a beautiful suburb of Philadelphia on the “main-line").

 
General Responsibilities

 

Assists with daily care, cleaning and maintenance of all program animals.  Assists with equine and animal assisted activities and therapies.

 

Essential Duties:         

 
  1. Supervises adults scheduled in stable management vocational training program.
  2. Assists Equine Instructor in conjunction with physical therapy, occupational therapy and the education department in carrying out goals and objectives of IEP/IPP in offering the following programs:  sports riding, hippo therapy, stable management and animal assisted activities.
  3. Reports any unusual behaviors or emergencies to direct supervisor.
  4. Feeds animals according to A.M. and P.M. feeding charts.
  5. Coordinates the areas for the animals to exercise and clean and refill water receptacles
  6. Cleans the stalls and pens daily.
  7. Observes safety practices and techniques in handling the animals, opening and closing the gates and making sure the stalls and pens are properly secured.
  8. Cleans inside water buckets, water bottles, bowls, etc. refilling with fresh water daily.
  9. Cleans barn by sweeping aisles, emptying trash receptacles and returning tools and equipment to appropriate placements.
  10. Administers first aid treatment when warranted, example-apply fly repellents, sunscreens, etc. as indicated by the supervisor.
  11. Grooms and attends to hoof care as indicated by the supervisor.
  12. All other reasonable duties assigned by Supervisors.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications

 


Education/Training:  High School diploma/GED required.


Certifications/Licensure:  Successful completion of employer provided certification in CPR, First Aid and Crisis Intervention.


Skill(s):  Ability to follow procedures and programs relevant to teaching and programming strategies. 


Experience:  A minimum of one (1) year equine stable management experience.

Employment at Melmark is contingent upon: Child Abuse Clearance, Criminal History Checks, Drug Screen, Physical Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
