Who's hiring?

As millions of baby boomers begin to retire, they are leaving vacant positions in the workforce and will require more medical attention in the coming decades. This growing demand has helped the health-care field weather the shaky economy better than many other sectors, and as a result it has a strong future for workers. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the U.S. will add 5.6 million health-care positions between 2010 and 2020. Supporting that estimate is a recent CareerBuilder survey, which found that 22 percent of health-care hiring managers plan to add full-time, permanent employees in 2013.

Yet, the same survey found that 23 percent of health-care employers have open positions for which they've been unable to find qualified applicants. Although demand is rising quickly and possibly outpacing the education and training of job seekers, many qualified workers may be unaware that jobs in health-care extend beyond the roles of physicians, surgeons and nurses -- though those positions certainly are in demand. Workers with skills in marketing, engineering and business are also important in running a health-care organization.
